In mid-November, I moved to the Franklin Hills neighborhood in Los Angeles.
It's a neat part of town... part of the Los Feliz district which, insufferable hipster factor aside, is said to be the most "New Yorkish" part of LA. Possibly the most distinctive feature of Franklin Hills is the Shakespeare Bridge, in all of its Gothic Revival goodness. It's around the corner from my house, and I either drive or walk over it every day. This is not a bad thing. (By the way, that link is awesome. The picture is interactive, and you can use your mouse to drag it around in order to see a 360 degree view from the center of the bridge. Science! A bunch of photos can be found on flickr as well)
The other, lesser known attraction of the neighborhood is a series of 14 staircases originally built for easy trolley access. There's a neat hiking map .pdf file on the neighborhood's resident association website, and since I have the week off I'm gonna give that urban trail a whirl later this week.
OK, a purpose for this site: I'm going to write about Los Angeles-specific adventures. This is my first attempt at dipping my toes into the genre of place blogging.
The following pictures are from a Tom Waits-related photography project I undertook in December, and I'm reposting them here to test Vox's photo uploading abilities.
... and got a basic TypePad site, because I wanted the password-protection feature (the blog is here,
but you won't be able to read it). I'm hoping that having a place
to write about private stuff for a limited audience of friends will
inspire me to do more over at my regular joint.
That leaves the Vox site as a bastard child/vestigial remnant.
I'm not abandoning the blogspot site, as I've been writing there
consistently for four years now. But as I said below I love the
Vox UI and I think the templates are very attractive, so I'd like to
find a use for it. Any ideas?
Hmm. Vox is pretty.
It's a shame that there's no way for non-Vox members to see private
entries. For what Vox does in this regard, I could just use
LiveJournal.
I'll play around with this for a few days and see if I can find a
use for this site. My regular blog, four years old, can be found
at the_bone.blogspot.com
